What Up Yo.
First off, I get a call from Mr.Duke Monday night…
“Did you see??? The new Teaser for “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” is coming!!!”
I had no clue, thank the gods for Duke.
The first reimagined “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” was directed by Rupert Wyatt. Brilliantly directed I may add. That film was leaps and bounds above what I expected. The pacing was “Superman: The Movie“, 1978 pacing. I took its time, built a wonderful genesis story…allowed for the Caesar character to develop and complete a full character arc without rushing into the action of the film which is what puts that film in an elite category for me.
The next film would need a little something different, the next film would need gasoline. The scales have been tipped, and revolution…like Rage Against The Machine “Fuck You I Won’t Do What You Tell Me” revolution… is now.
Rupert Wyatt’s vision was core to the first film working along with his team…and especially due to absolutely brilliant performance of Andy Serkis and the team of people at Weta. I heard from Mr. Duke, who read this piece on AICN that Rupert said in explaining his vision for Dawn, think “Full Metal Jacket“.
Oh my god that’s awesome.
From the article:
“There’s so much we could do… The ideas I’ve had are all sorts of things, ranging from FULL METAL JACKET with apes… you could start this story again eight years from where we left off, the next generation of apes, those that have come from our protagonists, perhaps going in to a conflict with humans and showing real fear, in the same way as going into war for young soldiers in this day and age, telling their story. Or how apes are taking over cities, and being moved into human environments and having to interact with them and deal with things that are part of our culture and understand and evolve through them. Spies that are in the employ of the apes, working against humans and humans maybe existing underground, because that’s a way they can avoid the virus, coming up above ground wearing gas masks, and maybe that’s what dehumanises them.”
Enter Matt Reeves.
16 months ago I hear that Matt Reeves would helm this film and I thought…
“Matt Reeves…like “Cloverfield” Matt Reeves?
oh man that’s cool.”
“Cloverfield” is a masterwork…
But Rupert Wyatt is gone? I’m never a fan of taking apart the team that built you an original, successful film…the first in a new franchise no less…and replacing them with a new team. But…considering the talent behind DAWN and that I’m often proved wrong when ever I try to generalize because generalizing leads to stupidity…I’m open and hopeful on what the new team will bring to the second and core act in this series.
Also sounds like Franco isn’t in the new one. Sounds like he was set to be a part of it at some point when Wyatt was still in involved, he told MTV late last year the following:
“I was going to be a small part of the next one. There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct. But there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert’s not a part of it so I don’t know. My guess is I won’t be in it. Nobody’s talked to me since Rupert left.”
You can read more in detail at “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Wikia”
What I do know is that the apes and humans haven’t spoken for 10 years in this film…the apes have evolved more so…a small band of human survivors try’s to make contact with the apes to arrange a peace, but something goes wrong…
The new film stars Gary (goddamn best actor alive) Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell.
It will be unleashed on July 11, 2014
He is the first teaser, some of the artwork released, a synopsis from the Dawn website and a trailer and artwork from RISE thrown in because thats how I role.
A GROWING NATION OF GENETICALLY EVOLVED APES LED BY CAESAR IS THREATENED BY A BAND OF HUMAN SURVIVORS OF THE DEVASTATING VIRUS UNLEASHED A DECADE EARLIER.
THEY REACH A FRAGILE PEACE, BUT IT PROVES SHORT-LIVED, AS BOTH SIDES ARE BROUGHT TO THE BRINK OF A WAR THAT WILL DETERMINE WHO WILL EMERGE AS EARTH’S DOMINANT SPECIES.
